ORIGINAL ARTICLES The relationship between the neuropsychomotor developmental skills, the auditory and expressive vocabulary and language development in children aged from 24 to 36 months Marinheiro, Maria Eduarda Pasculli Barbosa, Julia Neves Brocchi, Beatriz Servilha Osborn, Ellen Perissinoto, Jacy Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to explore the relationship between neuropsychomotor skills, auditory and expressive vocabulary, and language development. Methods: 30 volunteer parents and their children, children of both sexes, without auditory, neurological, psychiatric conditions, or syndromes. As materials, the Neuropsychomotor Development Checklist (NPDC, unpublished), 20 questions about the first milestones of child development; the Language Development Assessment (ADL), to assess overall developmental milestones; the Auditory and Expressive Vocabulary Test were used. Descriptive percentages and statistical analysis, the Chi- Square Test (as statistical significance p<0.05), were used to associate the results. Results: of 30 participants, in the Vocabulary Tests, both auditory and expressive, 17 participants (56.7%) underperformed and it was less than expected for the vocabulary development, and there was no statistically relevant association to ADL. Children who did not meet the two of the development milestones of NPDC - pointing to body parts by 12 months and putting two or three words together - were associated to statistically relevant underperformance in the ADL (p=0.018, p=0.015, respectively). Conclusion: these findings highlight the critical role of global development, environmental stimulation, and social interaction in early language acquisition, suggesting the need for comprehensive assessment and early intervention. |
Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to propose a myofunctional speech-language-hearing teletherapy program focusing on chewing and swallowing for individuals with temporomandibular disorder. Methods: the first stage included a scoping review, which found strategies that served as a basis for creating the program. In the second stage, a speech-language-hearing pathologist specializing in oral motor therapy applied the initial version of the therapeutic protocol to 29 patients diagnosed with temporomandibular muscle dysfunction, seeking to verify the instrument’s applicability. In the third stage, three speech-language-hearing pathologists specializing in oral motor therapy analyzed the protocol and suggested changes. Results: the version created from the scoping review was applied to 29 participants, making no adjustments in this stage. All format modifications suggested by the specialists were accepted, whereas content changes were accepted when at least two participating professionals agreed, who suggested minor changes. The final protocol version had 14 sessions - the first and last for assessments and the rest for therapy. Conclusion: the program was created, adjusted, and presented, aiming to assist and guide professionals in orofacial myofunctional speech-language-hearing teletherapy with this population. Further research is greatly important to validate this instrument. |
Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate the self-perception of vocal signs and symptoms in people who report snoring, analyzing how the intensity and frequency of snoring can impact voice-related quality of life. Methods: participants were assessed remotely regarding their voices (Voice-Related Quality-of-Life Protocol and Voice Symptom Scale), self-perception of snoring (the Berlin Questionnaire and the Stanford Snoring Scale), and obstructive sleep apnea (STOP-Bang Questionnaire). Data analysis involved data description, multiple linear regression, and correlation assessment (Pearson’s test) between variables. Significance was set at p-value < 0.05. Results: the study included 178 individuals divided into the snoring (SG) and non-snoring groups (NSG), according to the presence or absence of self-reported snoring, respectively. Multiple regression analysis indicated that group and sex were significant predictors of the Voice Symptom Scale score. The SG had a significantly higher Voice Symptom Scale score, suggesting a more negative self-perception of vocal symptoms. Conclusions: people who report snoring also report more vocal signs and symptoms. Snoring intensity correlates positively with vocal issues, suggesting that snoring may be related to vocal health. |
