Brief Background
|
Created by the Oral Health Research Support Association (APESB) with support from the State University of Paraíba, the journal Pesquisa Brasileira em Odontopediatria e Clínica Integrada, hereinafter known as PBOCI, had its first issue published in 2001. Always seeking excellence, two years later, the journal was indexed in the LILACS database. International recognition came in 2009, with indexing in the Scopus database, and soon after, it was also indexed in the Web of Science through the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) bibliographic database. From 2016 onwards, the periodical began to adopt a continuous format for publication, streamlining the entire editorial process. Indexing in the SciELO database took place in 2019, and in 2023, the journal received its first Impact Factor (IF) in the Journal Citation Reports. |
Open Science Compliance
|
In line with the Open Science guidelines, PBOCI adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors and the use of social networks to disseminate published works. Furthermore, it requires the precise indication of the contribution of each of the authors in articles with multiple authors through the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT), encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, roadmaps and additional materials, made available in open online repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare e OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. PBOCI encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as SciELO Preprints, Preprints.org, and Emerging Research Information (EmeRI), so that, if applicable, they are discussed openly before being published. Also, in line with open science practices, PBOCI offers authors and reviewers options to open the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Authorization to disclose the name may be given by the authors when submitting the article and by the evaluators when filling out the Evaluation Form on compliance with Open Science. The contribution of the Associate Editors is duly credited in the published article. Reviewers receive a declaration of the manuscript's opinion and can also validate the activity in Reviewer Credit. |
Ethics in Publication
|
PBOCI is dedicated to complying with good practices concerning moral conduct consistent with the scientific publishing of journals, based on the code of conduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), as well as the Equator Network e do International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authors, Editors, and Reviewers are encouraged to follow all standards of good scientific research practice. Preventing negligence is also a crucial responsibility of the editor and editorial team: any form of unethical behavior, as well as plagiarism in any instance, is not accepted at PBOCI. Authors who submit articles to the journal declare that their content is original and guarantee that the work has not been published, nor is it in the process of review/evaluation in any other journal. The journal adopts similarity-checking programs iThenticate and Crossref Alliance - with already published texts. PBOCI does not in any way condone plagiarism or any other unethical behavior. Cases of texts with similarity are immediately communicated to the authors. |

The Pesquisa Brasileira em Odontopediatria e Clínica Integrada (PBOCI) operates under the online mode of continuous publication. PBOCI is an open-access journal focusing solely on publishing works in Dentistry and related areas. Publishes Original Articles, Systematic Reviews (and meta-analysis), Critical/Scoping Reviews, Brief Communications, and Letters to the Editor.

Peer Review Process
|
PBOCI establishes in its editorial policy the following criteria for the evaluation process: adequacy to the focus and scope of the journal and the journal's technical (Vancouver), grammatical and formal standards, relevance, content, textual coherence, and theoretical-methodological consistency. The evaluation process consists of three steps, namely: 1) Preliminary analysis by the Executive Editor: It will be verified whether the manuscript is in accordance with the journal's scope, whether it complies with the general instructions, its relevance and contribution to dental science. Articles that do not follow the criteria will be returned to the authors for corrections as many times as necessary. If the papers are inappropriate or do not comply with the journal's standards, they may be immediately rejected based on the evaluation. 2) Forwarding to the Chief Editor (CE), Associate Editor (AE), and Reviewers: The article that complies with the standards will be forwarded to the Chief Editor, who will designate the Associate Editor. This will be responsible for the initial assessment of merit and the scientific method. After AE screening, the manuscript will be submitted to at least two ad hoc reviewers from institutions other than its author(s). When the article is published, the name of the Editor responsible for the evaluation process will appear. In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal adopts in its editorial policy the opening of the peer review process in common agreement with the reviewers. The reviewers, through an opinion written on a ScholarOne form, will recommend one of the options:
The Editor(s), after analyzing the opinion, forward it to the author(s). If the opinion requires major or minor corrections, the article returns to the author(s) for correction, modification, adaptation and/or justification of the reviewer(s) considerations. The revised manuscript must be submitted via the ScholarOne Manuscripts system by the same author who submitted the original manuscript. The revised version of the article must be re-sent accompanied by a response letter explaining each change requested by the reviewer(s), with all changes highlighted in the text using a different font color. Suggestions that are not accepted must be validly justified. Regarding suggestions and corrections made directly in the text, it is recommended that modifications be made to the Word settings to keep the identity of the author(s) confidential. The revised article and cover letter are initially evaluated by the Editor, who will forward them to reviewers when requested. If the article is rejected by one of the two reviewers, the Editor will decide whether to send it for evaluation by a third reviewer. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of articles. If there are any doubts regarding the statistical analysis, the journal will forward it to a statistical consultant. 3) Final Decision and Publication: The corrected article is sent back to reviewers for further analysis. After approval, the journal secretariat forwards the article to the company responsible for the editorial process. The final proof of the article in PDF format is sent to the corresponding author by email, with the author having a period of 05 (five) days to correct and return the duly revised original, if necessary. If the author does not return the final version within the established time, the Editor-in-Chief will archive the manuscript. After publication, changes to the text are not permitted, except if caused by errors on the part of the editorial team. After approval by the author(s) of the proof of the article and before publication, the author(s) will receive an email with instructions for paying the fee established by the journal. |
Open Data
|
PBOCI encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials, made available in open online repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare e OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles that communicate research must indicate and reference the content's availability underlying the research preparation and the results obtained.

Article Processing Charges (APCs)
|
All articles published in PBOCI are open-access and are freely available online immediately after publication. This is made possible by an Article Processing Charges (APC) that covers the range of publishing services we provide. Publication fees are fixed and independent of the page size of the article. Therefore, PBOCI adopts article processing charges of US$250 (Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars for foreigners) and R$850.00 (Eight Hundred and Fifty Reais for Brazilians), valid for submissions made until December 31, 2024. Payment for the translation of articles into English is the responsibility of their authors, exempting PBOCI from these costs. Editors and reviewers cannot access payment information, and whether authors can pay the APC remains confidential. Approval/acceptance of a manuscript is based exclusively on scientific criteria of quality, novelty and relevance to Dentistry. Brazilian authors with research funded by government agencies (CNPQ, Capes and FAPs) and whose manuscript falls into the Original Article category can request a partial discount on the publication fee. To this end, prior consultation with the Chief Editor is necessary before submission, justifying the reasons for the request. PBOCI offers APC exemptions for articles whose corresponding authors are based in countries classified by the World Bank as low-income economies. Ethics and Misconduct, Errata and Retraction Policy
|
PBOCI is committed to upholding the integrity of the literature and publishes Errata or Retraction Notices depending on the situation and in accordance with the COPE Retraction Guidelines. Corrections and Retractions: Authors are expected to carefully consider the list and sequence of authors before submitting their manuscript and forward the definitive list of authors at the time of submission. No additions or changes of authorship will be allowed during the evaluation stage or after acceptance of the submitted text. The published article in which the misconduct is identified remains indexed in the journal's database as retracted. The retraction documents the reason for the retraction duly referenced through communication from the author or editor or other authorized agent and published in the same journal. Retraction may be partial when the misconduct applies to a specific part of the article without compromising the published research as a whole. The article cannot be “unpublished”. Cases of errors or failures, regardless of nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct are corrected through errata. The journal will publish any errata, corrections or retractions as quickly as possible. Any additions and modifications to the submitted text must be made only before acceptance of the manuscript and only if approved by the journal's Editor-in-Chief. The Editor will only consider additions and modifications to the text in exceptional circumstances after acceptance of the manuscript. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published online, any requests approved by the Editor-in-Chief will result in rectification with a fee of R$500.00 (Five hundred reais) for Brazilian authors and U$125.00 (One hundred and twenty-five dollars) for foreigners (rate of corrections and retractions). |
Policy on Conflicts of Interest
|
They must be communicated not only by the authors, but by everyone involved in the editorial process of a manuscript. Authors are obliged to disclose any potential conflict of interest. The conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform it in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Authors must identify in the manuscript all financial support obtained to carry out the work and other personal connections related to the paper. If Associate Editors have a conflict of interest, such as articles submitted by authors in their department, research collaborators or relatives, they must delegate decision-making to another Editor. Reviewers must consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript. This information must be answered in the ScholarOne submission system form. Working relationships with the author must be considered. |
Adoption of Plagiarism Checking Software
|
As part of plagiarism prevention actions, PBOCI adopts the iThenticate and Crossref Alliance. Up to 30% similarity of the text is considered acceptable; above that, after verification, a notification is sent to the author so that he can review and plan to reduce this percentage to the established minimum. When there is a doubt or question, the editor-in-chief contacts the corresponding author and, if necessary, all authors. |
Sex and Gender Issues
|
The PBOCI editorial team and the authors who publish in the journal must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis and results, and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, PBOCI observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
|
PBOCI pays strict attention to ethical standards for carrying out research on animals and humans, so authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research. Certificates from animal and human ethics committees are required in the submission process. |

PBOCI uses the Creative Commons license (CC-BY), thus preserving the integrity of articles in an open-access environment. The journal allows the author to retain publishing rights without restrictions. |

| The Pesquisa Brasileira em Odontopediatria e Clínica Integrada journal endorses the PRISMA statement for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, clinical trials (CONSORT), the STROBE statement for reporting epidemiological studies, case reports (CARE), accuracy studies in diagnostic tests (STARD) and the RECORD (REporting of studies Conducted using Observational Routinely-collected Data) statement for reporting studies conducted using routinely collected observational health data. The journal recommends that all articles submitted comply with the editorial quality standards established in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Authors should check the EQUATOR Network for reporting instructions and more information. |
Manuscript format and preparation
|
The journal only accepts submissions and publishes manuscripts in English. The manuscript sent for publication must be original and simultaneous submission to another journal, Brazilian or foreign, is not permitted. Manuscripts must be submitted by one of the authors of the paper through the ScholarOne submission system; however, the names, emails and ORCID numbers of all authors must be entered during submission. Only online submissions are accepted to facilitate rapid publication. Submissions from anyone other than one of the authors will not be accepted. The submitting author assumes responsibility for the work during submission and peer review.

The manuscript must be written in English in a clear, concise, and objective manner. Contact PBOCI by email apesb@terra.com.br for information on recommended translation companies. Linguistic revisions carried out by companies that do not provide the aforementioned certificate will not be accepted. The text must be provided as a Word for Windows file (doc), using a font size of 12 Times New Roman, A4 page size, with 1.5 spacing and 2.5 cm margins. The length of the manuscript is limited to 16 pages, including references, tables, and figures. Title Page (required data): Title, Author(s) [Names of all authors written in full, including their corresponding telephone numbers and email addresses] and Corresponding Author. Institutional/professional affiliation data for all authors, including Department, Faculty/program, University (or other institution), City, State and Country. Abstract: Maximum 280 words. The abstract must be structured with the following divisions: Objective, Methods, Results and Conclusion. Keywords: Ranging from 3 (three) to 5 (five) five keywords, chosen from the keywords registered in the Medical Subject Headings of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (https://meshb.nlm.nih.gov). Introduction: State the purpose and summarize the rationale for the study or observation. The objective(s) and/or hypothesis of the study must be stated in the last paragraph. Avoid presenting an extensive review of the field. Material and Methods: Describe the study design, as well as the selection of participants for observational or experimental studies (patients or animals, including controls) clearly, including eligibility and exclusion criteria and a description of the population. Identify the methods, equipment (name and address – city, state and country, of the manufacturer in parentheses) and procedures with sufficient detail to allow other researchers to reproduce the results. Authors must have considered the ethical aspects of their research and must ensure that the project has been approved by an appropriate ethics committee, which must be declared. The type of statistical analysis must be described clearly and carefully, including the software used. Results: They must be presented in a logical sequence in the text, tables and illustrations, highlighting the main or most important findings. Discussion: This is the only section appropriate for subjective comments and reference to previous literature. Inferences, deductions and conclusions should be limited to the study's results (conservative generalization). Conclusion: It must clearly explain the main conclusion(s) of the work, highlighting its importance and relevance. Author contributions: The authors' contributions to the manuscript must be specified in this section. CRediT statements must be provided during the submission process and will appear above the acknowledgment section of the published article as shown: Conceptualization, Methodology, Software, Validation, Formal Analysis, Investigation, Resources, Data Curation, Writing - Original Draft, Writing - Review and Editing, Visualization, Supervision, Project Administration, Acquisition of Funding.
