Amsh., D. racemosa (Hoehne) Amsh. var. kaieteurensis Amsh.. D. ferruginea Benth. e Poecilanthe hostmanni (Benth.) Amsh. são discutidas como plantas pouco conhecidas ou novas para a Amazônia brasileira.

Summary In this paper the Leguminous Peltogyne subsessilis W. Rodr. is described as new species for Amazonia, and Diplotropis purpurea (Rich.) var. leptophylla (Kl.) Amsh., D. racemosa (Hoehne) Amsh. var. kaieteurensis Amsh., D. ferruginea Benth. and Poecilanthe hostmanni (Benth.) Amsh. are discussed here as interesting woody plants little known or new to brazilian Amazonia.

Summary In this paper the author presents notes about three species of genus Vismia Vandelli (Guttiferae): V. cayennensis (Jacquin) Persoon. V. subcuneata Huber and V. cavalcantii van den Berg, including the new variety V. cayennensis var. tenuinervia van den Berg and the new combination V. cayennensis var. sessilifolia (Aublet) van den Berg. The validity of V. subcuneata as a species is discuted here. A complemental description of fruits of V. cavalcantii var. cavalcantii is included.

RESUMO Quarenta e três madeiras de um maciço próximo a Manaus são estudadas sob o ponto de vista de celulose e papel. Inicialmente é analisada a expansão mundial da indústria papeleira, assim como a sua evolução no Brasil. Em seguida, é feito um estudo retrospectivo das principais realizações tendentes ao aproveitamento da madeira de maciços tropicais heterogêneos como fonte de matéria-prima para a produção de celulose. Informações sobre a área de coleta das madeiras, das qualidades das pastas cruas e alvejadas, das essências isoladas e em misturas, e das características dos papéis obtidos, são fornecidas, bem como dados referentes às análises químicas das madeiras e às características micrométricas das fibras.

Summary Forty-three hardwood from a timber stand near Manaus are studied under the pulp and paper standpoint. Firstly, an analysis of the expansion of the worldwide pulp and paper industry is under-taken, as well as its evolution in Brasil. Then, there follows a retrospective examination of the main tentative efforts to utilize mixed tropical forests as a source of wood for the pulp and paper industry. Data are given on the botanical aspects of the region where the woods were collected and its forestry, on the evaluation of the bleached and unbleached pulps, considering both the individual species and their mixtures, as well as the characteristics of paper samples produced therefrom. Given are also data on the chemical analysis of the woods, and finally the micrometric results of fiber measurements.

RESUMO Os resultados das análises qualitativa e quantitativa do conteúdo estomacal de tambaqui Colossoma bidens (Spix), foram relacionados ao comprimento padrão dos exemplares e aos meses do ano. Através de gráficos e tabelas, demonstra-se que ocorre variação periódica na alimentação deste peixe. A presença de frutos é constante na época de cheia dos rios, mas torna-se rara a medida que diminui o volume de águas. Os crustáceos planctônicos constituem um tipo de alimento freqüente para o tambaqui, predominando no período de seca. Considerando-se o tamanho dos exemplares, foi observado que tanto os de pequeno porte (100-190mm) como os de grande porte (mais de 600mm) apre sentam crustáceos planctônicos em seu regime alimentar. Com base nas análises classificou-se o tambaqui, quanto ao tipo de alimentação, como onívoro.

Summary The results of qualitative and quantitative analysis of the stomach contents of tambaqui, Colossoma bidens (Spix), collected in Lago do Castanho, Amazonas, were related to the measurements (standard lenght) of the specimens and to the months of the year. It is shown, with graphs and tables that there is a periodic variation in the alimentation of this fish. Fruits is constantly present during the season in which the river waters are hight, but is increasingly rare as the volume of the river water decreases. The following fruits occur most frequently: araçá — Duroia duckei Huber; cajurana — Simaba guianensis (Aubl.); capitari — Tababuia sp.; murrão — Gustavia augusta L.; muruxi — Byrsonina sp.; seringa — Hevea brasiliensis M. Arg.; seringa barriguda — Hevea spruceana M. Arg.; taquari — Mabea caudata P. et H. Planktonic crustaceans is another common food of tambaqui, predominantly during the dry season. Cladocerans, copepodes and ostracodes occur most frequently. In regard to the size of the fish specimens it was observed that the presence of fruit in the stomach contents was greater in individuals of more than 600mm and moreover that the micro-crustaceans formed part of the alimentation of all of the specimens examined. An examination of the branchial structure of tambaqui showed the fish to be adapted for feeding on plankton. The strong teeth also indicated the capacity to break the stones of fruit. These findings lead us to classify the tambaqui as omnivorous.

RESUMO Revisão do gênero Amazonina Hebard, incluindo 14 espécies, das quais 3 são descritas como novas, todas de distribuição geográfica neotropical. Contém catálogo e chave para a identificação das espécies, mapa e quadro com a distribuição geográfica e freqüência de cada espécie.

Summary Revision of the genus Amazonina Hebard, which includes 14 species. Three new species are described, all of the neotropical distribution. Catalogue and keys for identification are given and maps and tables for geographic and frequency distribution for each species is presented.

RESUMO Os autores descrevem uma nova espécie de Diptera-Simuliidae, o Simulium mutucuna, de material coligido no Território Federal de Roraima, no trecho da estrada BR-174, localidade denominada Campinho, próximo à fronteira com a Venezuela. Embora procurassem formas imaturas em riachos próximos, somente um adulto foi capturado atacando dentro da mata.

Summary During studies of possible vectors of Onchocerca volvulus near the Brazil-Venezuela frontier about 600 meters altitude, the authors captured a new species of black fly that is named Simulium mutucuna, from of the Nheengatú "black fly".
